SP2: file download - security warning

Have just upgraded 7 x networked Win XP Pro machines to SP2 and all has gone
smoothly.

One niggle remains:

We are a small business and run a small intranet on SBS 2003 with IIS6.

On one ASP-driven area of the intranet we have hyperlinks to MP3 files
(format: file://server/MP3MusicCatalogue/Album/SongTitle.MP3) which, when
clicked, download the relevant MP3 file from the server and play it locally.
All machines run IE6.

Four machines play MP3's in Windows Media Player 9 and when the MP3 links
are clicked, the MP3 files download and play immediately without any further
user intervention.

Three machines play MP3's in Winamp 5 for a variety of reasons and when the
same MP3 links are clicked, a File Download - Security Warning dialogue box
always pops up asking if we want to Open or Save the file. When we click
Open, the MP3 file downloads and plays normally.

What is the reason for the dialogue box popping up every time on the Winamp
5 machines but not on the WMP9 machines?

Is there a setting post-SP2 that enables MP3's to download and play
immediately on the Winamp 5 machines?

Note, the settings in IE6 under Tools > Internet Options > Security are
identical on all machines e.g. all download options are marked "Enabled".

John,
Those 3 machines opening Winamp have Winamp as their default program for
opening MP3 files while the other 4 machines have WMP 9 as their default
program for opening MP3 files. It's as simple as that. You need to either
change Winamp's MP3 setting in the Options area or find an MP3 file in
Windows Explorer. right-click 'Start' > 'Explore' > find an MP3 file
right-click on the MP3 and click 'Open with' > 'Choose Program' > click and
hi-lite the Winamp icon > check box that says 'Always use the selected
program to open this kind of file' > OK. That should do it. Good Luck.

Understood. That's by choice. We have elected to use Winamp as the default
MP3 player on those 3 machines and to use WMP9 on the other 4 :)

The issue is we simply want to get rid of the file download - security
warning dialogue box and simply open MP3's immediately in Winamp when a
hyperlink is clicked rather than being forced to also click "Open" in the
dialogue box every time.

If we navigate to an MP3 file on the server and double click, it downloads
and plays immediately in Winamp. But, post-SP2, if we click a hyperlink we
always get the dialogue box with machines running Winamp.

I also tried right-clicking an MP3 file on a Winamp machine and clicking
"Open" and this still brought up the dialogue box asking if I wanted to Open
or Save the file.

It works fine on the WMP9 machines and used to work fine on the Winamp
machines pre-SP2.

Perhaps related to SP2's built-in firewall?

Have you created an exception for Winamp
within it? It may be trying to "phone home"
to get title/track info of some kind... (wild ass
guess here).

Excellent suggestion.

I have now created an exception but it had no effect :-(

Drat.

Do the firewall logs show any outbound
activity when starting Winamp? (or does
SP2 firewall offer a log?).
