sp2 disk

Hello - I went to the M.S. site to order an sp2 disk for an xp home o.s.
Below is what was in my basket -it was the only choice and did not seem to
be a 'home' disk. Could you tell me if it will work with an xp home o.s.? If
not where can I order the appropriate one?

You should not worry. You want SP2 for HOME, and that s one of the available
options for that CD.

No, that is distributing, something Microsoft reserves for itself
largely for security reasons.
Have them order or burn their own SP-2 CD.

I have an sp2 disk, can I burn a copy for my friend that will be
trouble free?

I just glanced at a memo I saved from MS and it clearly states that SP2 can
be copied, shared, and sent around to other people. They wanted as wide a
distritubtion of it as they could get.
There is only one official SP2, so a proper full copy of it will work
fine on another machine and affects nothing, including activation; I've used
my copy of the disk several times of several machines for other people and
it's legal to do so. I'm too lazy however to back that up with a link; I'll
leave that to anyone with the gumption to look for it<g>

Are you sure?
Where did you see that?
IIRC, it says something about sharing the link, not the download.

That would be a major shift in policy for Microsoft to encourage
people to distribute as you suggest.

Yup, I'm sure of it. A surefire way to make me look something up is to ask
me if I'm sure when I have the saved file right in front of me <G>. I
honestly didn't expect it to still be there, but it is.

On the page where you can order the CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
is this little blurb:
"
Share This CD with a Friend
After you have installed Service Pack 2, Microsoft encourages you to give
this CD to a friend or family member using Windows XP.
"

It's toward the bottom, just above the Order Now link. If for some reason
that link trashes, let me know and I'll get a shorturl but I hate those
things.
There's something similar and with more verbiage in the download area
IIRC, but I truthfully don't feel like looking for it. I just lucked out
and stumbled onto this one quickly.
It makes sense, to me at least, that they would want the widest
distribution possible for SP2 since it supposedly "fixed" "everything" that
was wrong< G >. Kind of like the "most secure" os ever with 95, 98, 98se,
98me, xp...... ... ... . lol.

I'm hoping they'll do something similar for SP3 if/when it's ever actually
released. I sure don't think paying for it would be fair with all the
precedent they've set. Seems like, but I'm not sure, it was the same for
SP1 also.

Cheers,

Hello
I'm sorry, Jupiter, I understand everything except when you said, "No, that
is distributing, something Microsoft reserves for itself > largely for
security reasons.
Are you saying it is or it is not a good thing to burn an sp2 disc with
Sonic 6.5 for my friend?

J

Correct.
Your friend can order the CD, but if you burn it to CD and give it to
your friend, you are an unauthorized distributor.
That is not to say it does not happen or that Microsoft is going to do
something about it.
But the potential gets higher for people to get malware deliberately
added when these copies are distributed, perhaps starting from a
trusted source then getting to others unknown who may have bad motives
for others they may share.
For further clarification, ask an attorney specializing in software
licensing.

However sharing the CD sent from Microsoft is a different matter and
is encouraged.
