sp2 boot problems

Having installed sp2 from cd to xp home the system will not restart after the
reboot request. It starts to the point just prior to the desktop appearing
but halts on a screen similar to the choose user screen only with no users.
The mouse pointer can be moved but ctrl, alt, del has no effect.
Numerous reboots have been tried and the boot menu is unavailable to attempt
safe mode boot up

Hi

You can't get to the Safe Mode access screen by using the F8 key? If not,
you may have to perform a 'Repair' install of XP.
