SP2 and shares

I used to be able to share a folder as another drive
letter on the same machine using XP sp1a
(i.e. \\host1\share1 as z: on host1
so on host1 I had c: and z: with z: ->c:\share1 )
After SP2 I can no longer do this.
It allowed to keep a whole CD online without having the CD
in the drive because it recognized z: as a CD.
Is there a workaround?

Error message please. It'll help us a lot.
I'm using SP2 and it works.

Error Msg:
The mapped network address could not be created because
the following error has occured.
The network location could not be reached.
I tried \\host1\share1 with the machine on a LAN and it
works.
If I reboot off the LAN and no IP address is DHCP'd I get
the error.
Also tried \\localhost, \\127.0.0.1, added some dummy host
names in /w../system32/drivers/etc/hosts.
They all ping but will not allow the loopback to connect.
???
