I have the pop up stopper (free one) installed. Should I uninstall it now
since sp 2 has one included. I also have a router with built in firewall
protection. Do I still need the windows one activated too?

Thanks
Mary

Popup Stopper - Uninstall the free one and use the one with SP2 it works
great.
Router - Routers do not have firewalls that I know of they have what is
called a NAT, yes use Windows Firewall at all times.

NAT

See which pop up blocker works better. In general you don't need two.

Firewall - you should also run a software firewall in addition to
whatever protection the router gives, but don't use XP's built in one.
It works fine but it only monitors in coming. It doesn't check for any
nasties on your system calling home, which your router won't control
either. That's why you need a software firewall that monitors both
ways. There are good ones from Sygate, Zone Alarm and Kerio to name three.

The Windows firewall gives no more or better protection than the NAT. Mary
needs a third party firewall to prevent unauthorised access to the net by
malware.

Your advice is simply bad.

If someone does not know how to config. a personal firewall they do no more
good then a not having one.
Windows firewall & the NAT along with the Popup blocker and a little common
since will do fine.
That is as long as you have a good virus software also.

At one time I had the free Zone Alarm installed but I had constant pop ups
from the Zone asking whether to allow this one or that one to open, etc. It
drove me crazy so got rid of it. One thing is for sure is I do not know how
to configure one. I do have the F-Prot Antivirus running, also use Ad
aware too. Soooo before the sp2, had no problems just using the "router" ,
pop up stopper and F-Prot. Hopefully everything continues to work well.

Thanks all, appreciate it.

Yes Mary I believe you will be fine, that is all I am running also and have
no problem.
Continue to monitor your system with Ad-Aware SE, delete your cookies & temp
files regularly (couple of times a week)
I am also running Spyware Blaster in the background, it is free all you have
to do is check and update it (I check for updates daily) for the free
version does not auto update.

You are missing the point. Neither NAT nor the windows firewall monitor
traffic leaving the computer. A 3rd party firewall does that.
