SP 1 or 2

Pam

Ok...I recently installed service pack 2 - had weird problems start
happening after that - ended up I could only boot up by putting the xppro cd
in the drive - then the computer would grab something off the cd and load up
normally...finally took it into the shop and THEY said ... that SP 2 is like
taking your hard drive out to the back yard, getting your husband's deer
rifle and shooting it and then trying to boot it up....and he had a few
other analogies to add but for time sake, you get the idea...

so...I'm wondering .... does anyone have opinions on WHY Microsoft would put
this out if it is so full of holes??? I have SP 1 on now....and am now
wondering whether I should even allow automatic critical updates? I'm so
frustrated and confused...and STILL reinstalling programs, finding old
files...ect...what a hassle - wish someone would have said DON'T install SP
2!!!

anyway - thanks for any ideas on the updates

I did tell people NOT to install SP2 and then I took a ton of abuse
especially from the Microsoft MVP's (shills) as I probably will again but I
stand by my original statement.

I have installed SP2 on my home and office pc. At the office, we have
installed SP2 on over 30 WinXP machines. I was very, very skeptical at
first after lurking in the WinXP newsgroups and reading all the horror
stories.

We have not had *any* problems with any of the installs, or subsequently.

I'm a MS MVP..and I'm not a shill.

| The 'shop' was wrong!!

| The following articles are very useful for a SP2 pre-installation:

Hi

Doing a little bit of 'housekeeping' before upgrading to SP2 makes all the
difference. You may have had bad experiences of SP2, but the majority of
people haven't.

Probably waiting in the wings to see how much longer you are going to
troll.

| Wow 3 MVP's heard from already. Wonder where the rest of them are?

Before you install SP2, it is best to thoroughly scan your PC for spyware
and malware. Those are the usual causes for SP2 to not function properly.
I've had SP2 on this machine since September, with no problems at all.

I don't doubt that you gave this advice based upon your ability to
successfully install SP2.. thank god you do not work on my vehicle.. I
shudder to think of what you may remove because you couldn't fix it..

Jim;
If you took abuse it was possibly because you failed to give a reason then
as you do now.
To simply say "NOT to install" is an insufficient answer for anything
including Service Packs.
However if you have specific reasons, post them so people can make informed
decisions.
There is a great deal of information in this thread alone as to why SP-2
should be installed.
Do you have anything of substance as to why SP-2 should not be installed?
