sounds cuts out when typing

Hi
I've always had problems with my PC where any sound that is being played
'stutters' when i'm typing

I'm using a Realtek AC97 soundcard, and a generic USB keyboard. I've tried
replacing the keyboard for another one, but it has made no difference

Out of desperation, I formatted my PC and reinstalled it this weekend, but
even with just Windows, and the device drivers installed, I still get this
problem

Can anyone suggest some things to try to fix this?

I don't know if its relevent or not, but I also have a Soundblaster Audigy
card installed, but this is disabled

There are many items that can cause this. But basically when you hit a key,
the sound program is interrupted and is not
gotten back to in time, to continue with uninterrupted sound. Check for any
programs running in the background. Do basic cleaning. I.E. Disk
Clean---defrag etc. What is speed of your system and memory size?

My PC is an old P4 2.8Ghz Northwood, with 512Mb of PC2700 RAM

There isn't anything running in the background, i've literally got Windows
installed, and device drivers, thats it! Any running processes are Windows
and/or device related

As for disk cleaning, as I just re-installed the PC, the partitions were
recreated, so there is only a day or two of temp/cached files, and there
should be no fragmentation at all

Any virus programs running? Try right clicking task bar select task manager
and check performance while typing.
