Sound

I am using XP and I have no sound. I had a hard time
getting sound. when I first installed XP home. I had
someone come over and after an hour or so we had sound.
Last month when we had the Domes Day virus we thought we
lost some files and we reinstalled XP. We did not lose
any data but we once more had no sound. I had a tech that
we paid to fix the problem and he couldn't. When I go and
click on the sound pages we can hear a click like it
wants to work. My friend down the street has the same
problem. Is this a common problem with XP? What do I need
to do? Looking for help.

If you paid a Technician and he couldnt fix the problem did he give
you your money back?
By reinstalling XP you removed the first fix or audio drivers. What
we need to know to help you is
the make and model of your Motherboard and if you have integrated
sound or have a separate PCI
Sound Card. If you don't have that info then you can use
www.belarc.com It's free and it gives you
inventory of your system.

Prolly have to install the XP sound drivers again. You should be able to
get them from your sound card maker's website.

Many things to check. go>start\run and type in dxdiag and navigate to the sound tab and do a sound test. If that doesn't do anything follow the testing procedures. go>start\control panel\administrative tools\services and scroll down until you find Windows Audio and then make sure it is set to automatic and the service is started. Double clicking the serice will open the configuration window. Go>start\control panel\system\hardware tab\device manager button and look for the sound, video and game controllers and click the +to open it and see if you have any yellow triangles with an exclamation mark in them. If you do then right click on this and uninstall it and then reboot and see if windows recognizes it. Also go>start\control panel\sounds and audio devices and see if any of the settings in here are available to you. If not then you need a new driver. Aida32 is free and will give you all of your hardware and software components along with links to get to the manufacturers site and often a direct link to the drivers download for XP. Many drivers are completely self installing but I recommend you download them to "My Documents" and save them in case you have future need of them. Trouble shooting the sound isn't all that easy there are so many things you need to look at. Good luc

Hi,

This normally fixes things: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this
key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that
reads: (value not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does,
check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same.

If not, more information here under: Where did my sounds go?
