Sound wont work

Here’s my problem:
I was trying to get my microphone setup one time, and after I rebooted,
neither the sound out or in would work.
I looked around and concluded that the winmm wdm audio compatibility driver
was corrupt or missing.
I looked for it but could not find a download for it on the internet.
Could anyone tell me what is wrong or where to find the winmm wdm audio
compatibility driver?

Laptop specs (if they are needed)
OS: Microsoft Windows XP 5.1.2600 SP1 Build 2600
Processor: Pentium 4 518-2.8 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB
Hard Disk: 40 GB
Memory: 512 MB
Sound Device: Realtek AC97 Audio

You didn't look hard enough. One Google search for "Realtek AC97" found the drivers in a
couple of seconds. Try uninstalling the existing audio driver from Device Manager,
download and install the latest Realtek AC97 audio driver at:

Make sure that you download and install the Windows XP compatible driver. Make sure to
read the READ ME at the site BEFORE downloading and installing the drivers...
