Sound problems with TV Tuner

Hello:

I have problems with intermittent sound dropping for a split second. The
more process I start, the worse the problem is while each application loads.
Once the application loads, the sound problem becomes less frequent.

My setup is a AIT AIW 9600XT with an ATI TVWonder Pro. OS is XP with 1GB of
RAM. Sound card is a Creative labs live value SB0100.

What I've tried:
1) Disable all ports and onborad devices which I don't use
2) Tryed reducing video hardware accelleration.
3) Lowered the sound quality of the sound card.
4) Enabled DMA for all drives

There is no sound problem if I play mp3 files or watching a DVD movie so I'm
leaning toward the conclusion that there is a problem with ATI software
and/or drivers.

May just be normal operation. What CPU? What's the % of CPU usage when you
have the problem. What version of MMC? Are you having the problem with both
cards? If your using newer drivers the AIW will be using digital audio but
AFAIK the TV Wonder Pro would still be analog. Did you do something before
this started?

Reinstall sound card drivers. Come to think of it I had a similar problem
last year, after installing ATI wares, and the sound card drivers were the
cure. AIW 9600XT, HDTV Wonder & Audigy2 in my case.
Look in Device Manager too see what the IRQ assignments are. You may be able
to move a card and even it out if it isn't already.
Set Audio Acceleration in DX to second from left.

What did I do before this started? I upgraded to Windows XP Home from
Windows 98 SE. I also noticed that overclocking has some affect on the
problem so, I'm now clocking my Barton 2500 Mobile @ 12x200 = 2.4Ghz. AGP
is set to 66Mhz, RAM 200Mhz.

When I'm using the TV tuner, CPU usage maxes at about 10%. When I launch
another process, CPU usage jumps to 100% for a split second...I'm assuming
that this is causing the sound problem.

Sound card drivers are the laitest available from the Creative website.
Adjusted audio acceleration in DX ... no difference.

Catalyst is 6.2. MMC is 9.08. Not interested in laiter drivers due to the
damned video on demand which runs at Windows startup.

IRQ assignments are as follows:
00 System Timer
01 Standard PS/2 Keyboard
08 System CMOS/real time clock
09 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
10 NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse
13 Numeric Data Processor
14 Primary IDE Channel
17 ATI TV Wonder Pro A/V Capture
18 Creative SB Live! Series
19 All-In-Wonder 9600 Series
20 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
21 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
22 NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter
22 Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller

The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X. I've also tried adjusting the PCI bus
timing between 15-127 ( range is 0 - 255 ).

Looks like your good to go on the IRQ settings. Never got into overclocking.
Didn't seem worth the hassle. If it's not the overclocking I'd put driver
install problem at the top of the list. My Audigy drivers didn't show a
problem but reinstalling still fixed it.
I'm thinking Cat6.2 had the Unified driver. Shows as "unknown A/V" or
similar. You might try the WDM drivers from 6.1 or earlier. I'm not sure
about compatibility. I just completely uninstalled Cat6.2/MMC9.13 ran the
CatUninstaller and went back to 5.7 to be sure it'd work with 9.08. Not a
gamer.
Check with M/B mfg for BIOS and chipset drivers if you haven't already.
Good Luck.

Well, it looks like I finally solved the sound problems...well, almost. The
biggest problem that was affecting sound was a setting in the
registry....most likely from a registry Tweak. It has to do with CPU
priority. More pricecely how the processor handles forground and background
processes. Once I changed the setting for both foreground and background
processes to be handled the same, the problem is solved....well, almost.
There is still a problem with FireFox hogging the processor. I've read that
this is a known problem. So far I figured out how to set FireFox priority
to belowaverage..however, I haven't figured out how to make this setting
permanent.

Overclocking depends on the hardware you have. My 2500+ Mobile Barton is
rated at about 1.6Ghz/166. It's overclocked to 2400/200. This is most
definately worth it. =o)

I was having a similar problem with X800-XT TV Tuner. I
have my Cable TV connected directly into the card.
Sometimes when I start the TV window, I'll see video but get
"static" for sound. OR, I'll get some sound with some
static in the background.

Didn't have this problem for the first 3 months I used the
X800-XT. Just started on it's own.

I think it might be related to the fact that, I only connect
my CABLE TV to the X800-XT when I'm getting ready to record
a TV program. When finished, I re-connect the cable to my
standard TV.

I tried using a splitter and signal amplifier, to always
maintain a video signal between the TV and the PC. But the
splitter caused a reduction in video quality, even with the
amp. I get best video quality when the cable is connected
directly to the PC/X800, AND using the signal amp.

So to fix the problem, I have to re-boot the computer WITH
the cable TV cord "CONNECTED" to the PC/X800-XT. Then, I
get audio.

So it seems that when you boot your PC, EVEN if you don't
have video or recording at Windows start-up, the X800 must
be checking for a video/audio signal from the cable.
Meaning, you SHOULD have your cable TV connected to the
PC/X800 AT ALL TIMES. Seems if you break the connection,
then put it back WITHOUT rebooting, you'll lose your sound.

Does this sound right? Glad you got your problem fixed.
Thanks for the tips, should this ever happen to me and others.

Gary
