Sound problems since Vista upgrade

Jim Weaver

Since I installed Vista Ultimate, I have been having problems with my sound,
it was perfect with XP Pro but now sounds garbled and static like. I spent
nearly 4 hours total with 3 different Microsoft techs and the last guy told
me my speakers had a problem. I went out and blew fifty on new speakers and
the problem still exists.
I do not have a sound card but rather get the sound via my Intel DG965OT
motherboard. If I can't find a fix for this then I guess it's back to XP.
Anybody else had this problem?

I should have added to my previous post that it's important to read all
readme's, etc. to determine the appropriateness of the driver for your
computer. The link I gave you is for Vista with a 32-bit operating system
(versus 64-bit). Check Control Panel\System for your system type, if you
don't know. Check Device Manager to determine whether or not you indeed
have a Sigmatel driver for sound, the current version, etc.

If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Have you tried the Windows Vista* 32 sound driver (Sigmatel) from Intel
here?

I got that driver and installed it and I get an error message that it failed
to load, I do have a 32 bit system.

As your motherboard appears to be equipped with Realtek sound, you might
want to try the Vista driver from the Realtek website..

Come back and tell us if it worked..

What is your computer make and model number? in Device Manager, what is
shown as your sound card driver provider, and version number? The OEM may
have made its own modifications to your motherboard.

My computer is custom built, it does not have a sound card but utilizes the
sound options in the motherboard. Worked perfectly with XP Pro.

I downloaded it but could not install it, said I was not authorised to make
the change.

I went back and downloaded the executable file and that started but then
quit because it stated it was the wrong driver for me.

Here's what I did to finally get sound with my onboard Intel sound chip,
which was a Sigmatel chip. (Though i was still using the last Beta of
Vista.) I installed the latest WinXP sound driver and then upgraded to the
Vista driver for my motherboard (or as close as I could get to it, since it
is an Intel OEM board for Gateway.) Installing only the Vista driver left
something out and I had no sound. The Vista driver did make a huge
difference in the sound. Good luck.
