Sound icon in taskbar is gone

Hello,

I just recently noticed that the sound icon near my clock in the taskbar
has disappeared. Everything else appears to be there. I've tried going to
the taskbar properties thinking that maybe it was just hidden, but it
doesn't appear to even be there. I also went to the Sounds and Audio
Devices in the Control Panel and then ticked the box next to "Place volume
icon in the taskbar" under Device Volume, but it gives me an error stating
that "Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the
Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel." I looked in Add/Remove Programs in
Control Panel and didn't see anything there so I'm at a loss. I'm hoping
that someone here will know how to bring my sound icon back. Thanks in
advance for any help you can give me.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Common issue. To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe
from the Windows XP CD to the system_root \System32 folder on your
computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps:

In the command prompt window type: Start/Run/CMD

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command:
expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the
Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly.
Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery
CD".

Once the volume icon is back in the notification area, run this edit to keep
it there:

Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
