Sound Distortion- very low and muffled

I can't get the sound on my laptop speakers working. It comes out very low
and muffled, i can barely hear a baseline if im playing music, and its too
muffled to make out much of anything. Turning it up all the way does nothing
and i tried using external speakers plugged into the headphone slot but the
same thing happend

Without knowing what sort of laptop or sound device, any advice available
here is limited. Checking with the manufacturers' websites for advice or
updated drivers would be sensible.

Its a Dell Inspiron 8500, and i checked and all the drivers are said to be
working properly. My speakers were fine last night when i left my apt and
then three hours later i came back and they were screwed up.
