Sound Distorted when playing voice or music

I am running Windows XP on a new Gateway with Gateway speakers. I have
upgraded all the drivers, etc. The voices and sounds are high pitched and
way too fast, making everything sound like the Chipmunks! Example - male
voices on recordings are high pitched and very fast. Anyone have any ideas
as to what I can do? I've run troubleshooter, I've upgraded all the drivers.
