Hello:

I am dealing an extrange problem and have not found solution and I will
appreciate any advices. My XP SP3 machine lost sound and the Control Panel
sound devices management indicated that it could not find sound mixer device
installed, although in Properties we could observe all Codecs and the
hardware device listed and without problems. I uninstalled , rebooted and
reinstalled Realtek sound drives many times. After all, I assumed
AliveNF5-eSata2+ motherboard built-in sound devices were bad, and installed a
new SoundBlaster (after deactivating the original one via SetUp). It didn´t
work. However in both cases * I could hear the Windows start up music * ,
but after that the players didn´t work. Micorsoft MPlayer 9 said 'internal
error'.
Finally, I bootup with Ubuntu 8.04 alive, and sound was perfect and players
did work. I suppose I lost something in XP, perhaps someting in registry.
What can I verify?. Can I repare hardware registry keys?. I have not registry
backup.

My best regards.

Roberto,

I have the same problem...I found out on MS Site that this is a problem with
the registry...except I don't know how to fix it...it recognizes something
else a the device...have tried finding out how to fix this problem and I
can't seem to find out anything except I'm posting my question in the wrong
area...yea...like THAT seems to matter...and no one seems to want to
help...like you...I reinstalled XP again but that didn't work...went to the
save point...no go either...I see you got yours working again...I just need
to know if there is some place to go on Microsoft that I can find the fix for
it....I know that I will NOT allow MS to update my files automatically since
this is the problem when I downloaded Service Pack 3....would appreciate any
help you could give...btw...also have a post in General....still waiting for
a reply if any will come....

Fortunately I founded the problem. Some services where down. The service
Windows Audio must be set to Automatic and should be iniciated.
I seems that perhaps another program o virus shutdown some services. I think
that in your case Windows Installer and Background Intelligent Transfer
Service are both needed to access Windows update site.
You can make a test, for a moment manually iniciate ALL services, and try
again. After that you can reconfigure at your preference.
Good luck.
