Sound card properly installed but no sound

Can anyone help please? My sound card has recently stopped playing anything
and possibly the system speaker too. It is tempting to think that it is
faulty but I am not convinced. I am using an HP Pavilion laptop with XP Home
Edition.

1. I first noticed a problem trying to pay a DVD. It didn't run properly,
was very jerky and no sound. However a CR Rom works perfectly well.

2. Windows Media Player (which is set as the default media player) and
Winamp play but there is no sound.

3. Audio CD's play but there is no sound.

4. I have checked that the sound software is installed and everything is
there as it should be. I am an intermediate PC user so know how to make all
the usual checks/settings and all appear to be in order. The sound system is
enabled, the driver up to date, no conflicts and to all intents and purposes
is working except there is no sound. However whenever I use a program which
is associated with sound the computer slows down and a couple of times has
hung. Under Voice/Sounds and Audio Devices/in Control Panel, I ran test
hardware and it said my hardware cannot place sounds, speake to vendor.

5. I have also reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled the factory
software but this has not solved the problem. At this point is tempting to
assume that the sound card is faulty, however,

6. The only common denominator I can think of is my daughter installing her
Ipod software on the computer and it seems to have messed around since then.
However the interesting thing is that since installing the Ipod software on
her desktop PC, her computer is doing exactly the same thing! Which is what
leads me to suspect that just maybe the sound card is working but there is
another problem. It seems strange that both sound cards should pack up!

Does any one have an answer please. I would be very grateful.

Sounds like you have arrived at the answer; remove recent Ipod software.
Restore computer to before Ipod software as another option.
