Sound Card Drivers Enables But Not Started

I have a Gateway Desktop computer with Windows XP Pro. It has a Sound
Blaster Audigy EAX Advanced HD sound card. Under Control Panel/Sounds and
Audio Devices it says No Audio Device and everything is greyed out. I have
uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled them, changed card slots, even tried
a different sound card. Everything installs fine with no errors. The
Windows Audio is set to automatic and started. Under the properties for the
sound device is says that the drivers are enabled but not started. Is there
something or somewhere that I can force the card to start? Is there
something wrong with the motherboard? Or is there something wrong with the
OS? If it is the OS, will a repair work or will it require a complete
reinstall? Thanks for all your help in advance.

Did that and it installs and works without any issues in the other PC. Even
tried a brand new sound card in the problem pc and it created the same
situation - drivers enabled but not started.

Just a WAG, but go into your BIOS and disable any onboard sound.

Checked that too. Onboard is disable. Even did a bios update. Still no luck.

Then I'm really sorry but I don't know. The First Question Of
Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the
time they didn't?

Got any programs running in the background that could be interfering
with the sound card? That's just another WAG. I haven't seen that error
before and I really don't know why you're getting it. I'm very sorry
that I was unable to help you.

Thanks anyways. The thing that changed was our IT guy tried to install some
anti-virus software onto the computer. Of course that slowed everything down
and wouldn't allow some programs to work. I tried to uninstall the AV
software but I don't think all of it was uninstalled but all programs were
able to run again like normal except for the sound card. I even did a system
restore but to no avail. Thanks again though.
