Sound Blaster problem

After my old HD died last week, I decided to change from W98SE to XP.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! 1024. While XP was configuring my hardware, it
decided it was a "Creative SB Live! Value (WDM)", but I don't know wether
this is relevant.

Sound is coming from the card to the audio amplifier which I use to play
sound, but when I try to open things like the Speaker or Mixer window I get
a message "Fail to initialize mixer".

I assume this is something to do with XP; has anyone had similar problems
and do you know a solution?

TIA
