Sorting the Address Book

I have used OL 2000 for some time now along with WIN2k on
two different computers. Recently I purchased a laptop
with XP Pro and OL 2002 installed on it. I backed up and
copied my .pst file (complete) and moved it to the
laptop. One difference I noticed right away was the
Address Book in OL 2002 did not have the "sort"
functionality that I had in the Address Book in OL 2k.
In OL 2k I could "sort" the Name column or the Email
address column in ascending or descending order when
looking for a specific name or address. In addition, I
could "sort" by first or last name as well.

Is this functionality available to me in the Address Book
or do I have to go through the frustration of cahnging
this through the Contacts?

Any ideas or suggestions?

You were using IMO mode in Outlook 2000 which did not even use the Outlook
Address Book. The Outlook Address Book still sorts the way it always did:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. > Set your sort order there

used IMO... If I recall I originally used Outlook Express
with WIN98, then migrated to WIN2k and imported WAB into
w2k and used that specfic Address Book v. 6.00.2800.1450
which allowed me to sort the names/addresses/etc. at the
top of column whether it was in the WAB view or Select
Names view (TO. My question is I really prefer that
style of sorting so can I use the Outlook Express WAB
with OUTLOOK 2002? I don't want to import the addresses
I want to use the WAB within O/L 2002. Possible??

You were definitely using IMO if you could sort your Contacts that way. The
Outlook Address Book cannot be sorted by clicking on a column header. No
other version of Outlook can use the WAB engine.

You can, however, force Outlook Express to use your Outlook Contacts as a
data source instead of the WAB file. That would allow you to sort your
Contacts in Outlook Express, but not Outlook. It takes a reg hack to do so:

OK, But I am using the WAB in Outlook 2000 - have been
for two years or more now. Don't know how that happened,
but I assure you I didn't do it on purpose (no reg hack).
I just assumed if it works in 2000 it would work in 2002.

One more thing then - WHY is there an Outlook Address
Book listed as an option under Address Book/Tools and
then it won't let you install it because there are no
addresses in it...How do you get the addresses into the
Outlook Address Book... I am confused why it is listed
but cannot be used.

No you aren't. As I told you, Outlook 2000 uses the WAB engine, but not a
WAB file. The data source is your Outlook Contacts Folder.

Normal behavior. The Outlook Address Book contains only the Contacts folders
you want to display. It cannot contain any entries. Just click on it. It
will tell you that.

RUSS,
My final comment - THANX for all your help - I would have
frustrated myself otherwise... I understand now what is
going on. The process, however, one must go through to
sort the address book in Outlook is a real hemorroid.

You might pass on to the "powers that be" that it would
be helpful to have the same "sort" functionality as the
WAB engine in OE. It is very fast and useful when
searching for an email address or name or duplicates or
old names & addresses that need to be deleted..I could go
on...but I sure you have heard all this before.
