Sorting order problem

Bill Leary

I've got a folder which I've got set to sort by name, ascending.

There is no grouping or stacking specified.

I've just added a new file to the folder, named 070804CC.JPG.

Rather than appearing among the other files beginning with 0708, it appears
immediately below the last folder in this folder, and above a file named
07010101.JPG. That is, it appears as the first FILE in the folder.

This isn't the first time this has happened. I just happened to have this
news group open when it happened this time.

Perhaps related to this, this is on my D drive. Another problem I have on
the D drive which I don't see on C is that when I change something, as in
edit a picture, put things into a folder, etc., the depiction of the item
in the folder doesn't update automatically. I continue to see the thumbnail
for the file before I altered it, the folder I just put things into
continues to show as empty, deleted files still appear, renamed files still
show as their former names. All this until I refresh the folder.

Any ideas on either issue?

I've noticed this is a new method of sorting by Vista

It now sorts numbers numerically

001
02
3
10

Instead of XP sorting numbers alphabetically

001
02
10
3

P.S Incase you are wondering

070804 (evaluates to 00070804) is smaller than 07010101 and why it appears
before it

You can stick a couple zeros on the end so it appears where you expect it
to: e.g. 7080400

Interesting.

And I imagine there's no way to turn this foolishness off either, eh?

I don't suppose we can hold back progress but I found a useful tool that
might help

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/denrenamer.html

It renames huuuuuge batches of files - You won't beleive how fast it is
(compared to windows) - I've used most features and it's really easy to
use - and it's free

Had I not seen the article, i would've sworn XP still sorted numbers
alphabetically - namely because i noticed this virtually instantly upon
using Vista - and here M.S are basically saying 'it's been that way for
ages' - surely not

For my home machine here I went from ME to Vista Ultimate. Most of the
machines I use at work are 2000. So I've had very little exposure to XP.
However, when I mentioned this to my son, who's been using XP exclusively
for a couple of years, he said something like "Oh, yeah. You can fix that
in the registry."
