Sorting on subject sends me to the top

When I have an email highlighted and click on the "Subject" column heading to
sort the listing sorts on subject correctly. However, instead of staying with
the highlighted email I'm sent to the top where the subjects are blank.
When my office neighbor highlights an email and sort on subject she goes to
where her highlighted email is, not to the top.
No macros or custom views involved. What can I do to stay with my selected
email when I sort on Subject.
