Some things are different in XP from 98. However, if you are in DETAIL
view, you can just click on the column title you wish to sort by.. If the
column you want is not there (in detailed view) then you can right-click on
a column (when you are in the folder you want to sort) title and choose
another column to add.

When you open an explorer window, right click an empty
space where you view the files, slide to View-->Details
This will change your view...of course.... next at or
near the top you will see a line with labels "Name Size
Type Date modified". Click on the tab labeled date
modified and it will arrange the file in ascending or
descending order for you.

In an Explorer/My Computer window, View - Arrange files - Modified

You may want to set this as default: Set up a window just as you wish
by default, including things like its Size, type of display, status and
tool bars, and this; check the 'Auto Arrange' as well there.

Then in its Tools - Folder Options - View, make sure 'save each folders
view settings' is checked and click the Apply to All button at the top
