Sort with header rows

B

Using Excel 2000

I have a table to sort, but the top three rows are all header rows. This
prevents me from using the Data | Sort option because the "header row"
option only eliminates the first row from the sort.

All I know to do is select all the rows in the table that need to be sorted
and then use the Data | Sort option and check the "no header row" box. This
gets cumbersome when there are hundreds of rows in the table to include in
the sort and only three rows in the table to exclude from the sort.

Any ideas?

Bonnie,

Add in an empty column into your data and take the top three
cells and merge them. Select this column in addition to your
other columns then do the sort.

Bonnie,

Not sure I follow. If you specify "no header row" then all rows get sorted,
and your header(s) can wind up anywhere.

YOur best bet is probably to combine the three header rows into one. Stay
standard, to make the most Excel functionality available to you. Merging is
not recommended -- causes a lot of problems down the road. Use Alt-Enter to
split cell text into lines, and/or Wrap Text (Format - Cells - Alignment).

As an alternative, put an extra row above the lowest of the three "header"
rows. You can hide it or make it very short (vertically). Now select a cell
in bottom header row when you do your sort. The added row above it will
isolate your first two headers. Specify that you have a header.

If farmer Brown takes a gallon of gas from Farmer Jones tank on the first
day, two gallons on the second day, etc., how long will it be before they
take farmer Brown away?

Thanks for the help. I've ended up putting a blank row between the header
rows and the data rows. With my cursor in a data cell, I can just use the
button on the toolbar for sorting .
