Sony vaio hot function keys

I upgraded a sony v505 from HOME to XP PRO w/sp2. Now the hot keys dont
work. This is a BIG deal on vaios as there are no physical volume &
brightness controls! This has to be a driver problem. I dont see why this
driver was not in the box since they have just about everything in the box
nowadays. I e-mailed sony and they are non-responsive.

Does anyone know what the driver NAME is for this? A list of supporting
objects would help too so I can search the XP disc for them. Thanks

Have a Sony v505 DC2 here. I had the same problem with an upgrade using a
retail upgrade CD. Had to buy the upgrade disk from Sony. They have drivers
on their website but AFAIK they work with Sony's version of XP.

You need to contact Sony and get their upgrade disk for your computer, It
has all the drivers.

Did you follow Sony's Home to Pro upgrade instructions, which includes
downloading and installing certain files from their website BEFORE the VAIO
ever sees SP2?

Next time, *THINK* before putting fingers to keys. Why on earth would you
find a driver to control something peculiar to Sony on a *MICROSOFT* Windows
disc? RTFM and/or contact Sony.

Uh & duh... I have this little sandisc mini cruzer I just bought that when
plugged unto XP is recognized... it is not a stretch of the imagination to
think they would do this with an even more popular device... My thinkpad
had no such problems either.

I already visited the sony site before posting this (I dont like to waste
peoples time), and it is unintelegible. I managed to get a working audio
driver (not in XP box either!), but nothing that said "hotkeys". I am
hoping someone knows either the names of these object(s) or a link for them.

None of those programs on the web site fix this. I downloaded everything
and it was a waste of time. What we learn is DONT buy an INTEL-based laptop.
AMD boards run the function keys without drivers.

Go to Google and search on "how to restore the hotkey utility"

SOLUTION: Follow this procedure to reinstall the HotKey Utility using the
VAIO Recovery Wizard program.

IMPORTANT:

a.. This model does not use Recovery CDs to reinstall the drivers.
Recovery data is included on a special partition of the hard drive.
b.. Do not interrupt the power during the recovery process.
a.. Close all open programs.
a.. On the taskbar, click the Start button, point to All Programs, and
click VAIO Recovery Wizard.
a.. In the VAIO Recovery Wizard window, click the Next button.
a.. In the Media and Recovery Options window, click to select the
Proceed with System Recovery option.

Recovery (Recommended for advanced users) option.

Yes I found it on disk 5 of the restore set for the OLD WINDOWS. So... there
is more than the old windows on it the set. "RA"s procedure is an even
better way to install it. I've never seen drivers packaged that way before.
Normally they are in windows or the come on a separate driver disk (the
comes with almost every new motherboard you buy).

I'm having the same problems. The Fn key control for volume and display jsut
stopped working. I tried reinstalling the hotkey driver but it didn't work.
Does anyone else have any other ideas on how to fix this problem. I agree.
This is a MAJOR INCONVIENIENCE. And Sony's online help is anything but.

Thanks

I'm very sorry for both of you, but this is a Sony issue. In order for
the laptop FN keys to work, you must be running laptop software from
the mftr. - in this case, Sony. Go to Sony's tech support downloads
website for your specific machine and download whatever software they
offer.

If you have already done that and have no luck, then I'm afraid you will
need to call Sony tech support.

search thru the start menu, there are sony utils there that you need to
run. Both the volume and screen f keys are "soft keys", and need to have
a "startup task" running in order to work. Same w/ the wireless switch.
All are in the start menu, you can fire them up and browse thru the
options menus, somewhere in there is the check boxes for setting the
statup tasks to "on".

Did you run msconfig or some-such and disable them?
