Sony GDM-F500R too bright

Hi!

While trying to adjust this monitor, I tried the very poorly documented
"Image Restoration" feature. This made the monitor irreversibly brighter
(black looks grey/brown), as far as the user controls go.. I waited a long
time in the hope it would subside. When it didn't, I tried it again, hoping
it was a toggle function. Of course, it made the screen brighter... No big
loss since it was so bad the first time.

Any assessments or suggestions for restoring factory brightness very much
appreciated. I cannot send it back to Sony; the send back a doomed refurb
with a 1-month warranty.

The contrast and brightness controls no longer operate to bring the
brightness down? You could try the RGB drive controls, which are
normally used to adjust the color temperature.

I don't know about doomed. If it doesn't fail in the first month,
it's probably not going to fail for a long time. You know of the
"bathtub curve" for electronics failures, right?

I've been using a refurbished F500R for a couple years now (got it as
an exchange for my defunct F500), and I'm very happy with it's
performance.

I have come across some modifications (on the web) for changing some
resistors (and adding a pot) on the CRT neck board to allow adjustment
of the G2 (screen) voltage which controls the overall brightness.
I gather a lot of monitors made by Sony have this problem. Sony uses
a DAS (digital allignment system - expensive) to adjust the brightness
and other parameters.
Are you handy with a soldering iron and know a little about electronics
?
If so, search the web to find the article.
