Sonic MyDVD

This is a little outside MM, but I see that Sonic MyDVD is
the choice of most for DVD burning so I thought I'd pose
this question here first to experienced users (ie
PapaJohn). I just bought a BUSlink external DVD burner
which comes with Sonic MyDVD. I currently have Roxio's
Easy CD Creator (w/DirectCD) v 5 basic for my internal CD
burner. The manual says to uninstall any current CD
burning software to avoid any conflicts.
Q1: Is this really necessary, anybody have any problems
with having both on their machine?
MyDVD also comes with packet CD burning software (DLA),
which as I understand it is similar to DirectCD which
turns CDs into floppys for drag and drop saving and
deleting.
Q2: If I dump Roxio, will MyDVDs DLA software read all my
DirectCD disks?
Just looking for some quick answers before I delete
software I currently use.

Feel free to email any responses and thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I can not say whether Sonics software can or cannot exist with other
burning software. I can tell you that Both versions 5 and 6 of Roxios
software do tolerate other programs of this kind.

This may give pause for thought...if this software does not like other disk
burning packages...how does it get on with the built in package that comes
with XP. I have that disabled on my system because its a right pain when it
tries to second guess your intentions.....

John,

Not quite sure what you mean here. By 'this' software I
assume you mean Sonic. As for built in with XP, I have a
Dell that was preloaded with Roxio 5 basic. I guess I
haven't checked to see if there is an XP preload, but I
think all I have is the Roxio. Just looking to see if
there will be a conflict. A coworker said I shouldn't have
to uninstall Roxio. However version 4 on my old pc had
more uses (ie Jewel case creator) that 5 basic doesn't
have, so losing it won't be a big deal, Except if Sonic
won't read my DirectCD disks.
Thanks for the quick response.

Hi Steve,

Windows XP itself has a CD-Burning service built into it.

As regards DirectCD, I never install it....I found it to be way to
intrusive, and of course the CD's are not useable on any machine not so
equipped.

Yes, "This Software" I meant that I do not know whether the Sonic
software co-existed with the built in CD-Burning system that is part of the
XP environment.

I am loath to give instructions in here as to how to turn off the XP
built in CD burning service....its in an area where mistakes can cost!!! If
you want to know, please contact me via my website

Hi again,

Yep, I should have made it more clear...It is very unlikely that the
Sonic package will be able to read a proprietary format such as DirectCD

I would not be all that sure that DirectCD has a future any more (with
XP at least) I note that it has been re-named in version 6 (Which I have not
installed) and I can not now remember if its in the new version 7

Steve,

Steve,

I'd create a restore point, do what the instructions say, and then use the
restore point to go back if you need to.

I've used Sonic and Roxio software... and have had some issues with Roxio...
and I've had great success using restore points. I wouldn't go forward
without one.

If you dump Roxio, I'd expect your disks not to be readable unless you've
closed the discs first.

Hi again Steve,

In the e-mail I forgot to ask whether you wanted the details on how to turn
the XP CD writing service of or not...and I have deleted both emails so I
no longer have your address.

If you do, send me a short one.

The full versions of Roxio 5, 6 and 7 all have CD cover creators... 6 and 7
have the addition of DVD cover creators. I never had 5 and 6 on a PC
together, (I uninstalled 5 before adding 6), but I do have both 6 and 7
happily running on my current desktop.
