Sometimes I see JavaScript, and sometimes I don't

I'm using IE6 with all updates on W2k.

Recently, IE has started having a little problem with a few sites that
display or rely on JavaScript. IE sometimes acts as if it's turned off the
javascript feature, and other times it displays Javascript fine. This isn't
with just one site, but it can act this way on several sites.

Refreshing the screen doesn't seem to work. Shutting down IE and starting it
back doesn't seem to work, and rebooting doesn't either.

I use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall, and AdSubtract. I have not performed
any changes with either program. I have even disabled these two programs
without any success.

My other two browsers, Opera and Mozilla, do not seem to have this problem.
(I use multiple browsers for designing web sites.)

My general feeling is the problem is with IE
Any suggestions?

Please be more precise. Exactly what makes you think Jscript is turned off?

My friend says that he had the same problem but switched
to mozzila which fixed it.

Hey JB, do you suppose the cross site scripting fix might have a bug?

Your JavaScripting is probably a bit better than mine (sigh) so I wondered
if that might get you thinking?

Only ever used small JavaScript stuff on the page (as it were) but suppose
it doesn't like .js files or something like that? Maybe comparing a few of
the sites you mentioned?

Thanks for the reply, Charlie.

The only reason why I mentioned that I had so many browsers was primarily to
indicate that my Jscript problem appears only in IE. I also mentioned the
multiple browsers because someone will usally always asks me why I have so
many browsers, or why don't I just use one of the other browsers that is
working fine. :)

Here's my generalized logic towards troubleshooting browsers:
If I'm having a problem with *one* browser and the web sites that I normally
visit are designed okay, then I need to troubleshoot the troublesome
browser.

If *all* of the browsers react the same way to a site, then usally it's the
site that could be troublesome.

Several sites that I visit on a regular basis contain Jscript that have
worked fine in the past (including the sites that I designed), but now the
Jscripts displays at those sites do not work correctly in my IE6 browser.
There could be more incidents of Jscript not working correctly at other
sites, but I can only tell from the sites that I'm familar with.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for responding, Sandi.

I'm not sure how to answer the precise question except...
= I use IE6 in W2k with all updates.
= I've turned off all supporting software (Zone Alarm) to eliminate those
items as having any influence.
= The problem doesn't occur in other browsers; Opera, Mozilla.
= I haven't altered any settings, but I cannot vouch that anyone else
hasn't. I tried to look under "Options" to see if anything has been changed.
I didn't notice anything that would affect Jscript.

I went into a little more troubleshooting detail in the reply message to
Charley.
Exactly what makes you think Jscript is turned off?

There are several sites that I visit, including some that I designed, and
the Javascript in those sites do not appear to work within my desktop
computer's copy of IE6. A few examples of non-functioning jscript would be
"page last updated" or links that are designed around jscript.

Those same sites appear fine when they are displyed in Mozilla 1.4 and Opera
7.1.

Those sites also appear fine when I visit them from my other laptop XP
computer that uses IE6.

Everything appears to point at my desktop computer's IE6 as having the
problem.

Thanks again for responding!

I was finally able to correct my Javascript problem in IE6, but I still do
not know what the problem was or what caused it. I corrected the problem by
doing a re-installation of IE6.

After the installation, I checked all of the various preference settings at
several locations, and I didn't notice anything different from the version
that I replaced. I can only assume that the problem was deeper than just a
parameter setting that could be changed.

I went ahead and did the reinstallation when it began to look like the
problem was difficult to diagnose, or that my description of the problem was
either poor or too generalized.

I want to thank the people that responded to my problem.

i have same problem, however re-installing did not fix it. How did you
reinstall? MS told me to change a registry setting which allowed me to run
iesetup and not get the message saying that a new version is already there
..

is that what u did?

I suspect that IE registry settings are getting corrupted by IE, of course
you will never get that admitted by MS, its alwyas some other program that
is at fault.
