Something wrong in taskbar notification area

This is a new computer, I have been setting up drivers
etc. After loading a Umax Vistascan 3.55 the taskbar
notification area looks different than the rest of the
taskbar, ie. no longer shaded similairly and the option
to hide inactive icons is not working (even though
checked to do so). What is going on? How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance

Mike, re: the Vistascan and UMAX scanner- do your programs like Photoshop,
PSP, etc, recognize the TWAIN drivers for it? Mine did before I had to
reinstall XP but won't now, and I don't know why. I tried asking the MS guys
and got no solution. UMAX said to upgrade the software, which I did, but
still no go. It isn't life or death that this won't work because the
Vistascan works great, but if I were in PS and wanted a quick scan of
something, it would be nice if it did this again.
