some upper case symbols in wrong place

some of my upper case symbols are in the wrong place. e.g. can't find pound
sign and @ is above '2'. " is above '| is above \ which is where hash should
be etc

Sounds like you have set your keyboard to US International instead of
English (UK). Check in the Control Panel in Windows.
