Some programs/applications will not load or are extremely slow

I

imaweb2

Can't get one of my programs/apps to load. Nothing new on computer except a
new day. Task Mgr indicates it's running, but nothing displays. Have
deleted all temp files/cookies/cache, checked my memory, done a clean boot,
removed large programs, adjusted RAM, cleaned registry, defragged drive,
firewall on, firewall off, swore, did the Hokey-Pokey...nothing has helped!
When I close program from Task Mgr, pop-up window says program is not
responding, end task, yada, yada, yada. Most other programs are S-L-O-W to
load.

Any suggestions??? HELP!

Could you at least give us a hint as to what program and operating
system you are dealing with?

My crystal ball says: Mozilla Firefox and Windows Vista.

Something must have happened in the last twenty-four hours.

Why not try System Restore to the date when your program ran fine?

Also, giving us all the relevant specs might give us a clue as to what's
going on. What flavor of Windows and what Service Pack? How much memory
do you have? How large is the hard drive and how much free space is
there? When you run Task Manager, are there any entries in the Processes
tab that are using lots of CPU cycles? Also, provide the relevant Error
reports from Event Viewer:

Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer |
Application

(Check System, too.)

If you come across a recent error, double-click on it and click on the
Copy button (upper right-hand corner below the down arrow button). Then
you will be able to paste that information in your next post.

Are you relying too much on the pagefile? A quick way to determine if
this is happening is to open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click the
Performance tab. Then note the three values under Commit Charge (K): in
the lower left-hand corner: Total, Limit, and Peak.

The Total figure represents the amount of memory you are using at that
very moment. The Peak figure represents the highest amount of memory you
used since last bootup. If both these figures are below the value of
Physical Memory (K) Total, then you probably have plenty of RAM. If not,
you are using the pagefile too much. The solution is to ease up on all
the memory-intensive programs running (often in the backgrond)
simultaneously and/or purchase additional RAM.

What exactly do you mean by "cleaned registry"? Messing with the
registry can actually make things even worse.

What is the malware status of your PC? And how did you determine that?

What is the name of this program that will no longer run? What are the
names of the programs that run slow?
