Some links do not work. Some pages display wrong.

I have a problem with Internet Explorer on a Windows ME
system where:

certain links do not work. For example with yahoo mail
when you try and forward an email the "TO:" link does not
display anything. In addition on this website the "New
Post" "Post Reply" and "Search" buttons are not even
displayed. I had to go to my library in order to post to
this forum.

certain web pages display improperly. They work fine on
other pages but on my PC the text is starngely formatted.
For example on stltoday.com (website for the St. Louis
Post-Dispatch) the main page displays okay but any
articles display wacky.

I've tried all sorts of fixes and nothing seems to work:
* reinstalling Windows ME
* uninstalling and reinstalling IE 6.0
* downloads from java.com

My main source has been Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
168806 titled "How to Troubleshoot Java Problems in
Internet Explorer" I have the problem where the Beleweled
website will not display. So the problem is with one
website. However the solution they give does not work.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

In addition some secure pages will not display while other
will work okay. When I try from another PC all the same
secure pages work fine.
