solver question: educational premium solver

Hello, I'm taking a systems and industrial engineering class, and
we're using: Optimization Modeling with Spreadsheets by Kenneth R.
Baker. This book has a cd with the premium solver, educational
version. The problem is that it just won't work with excel 2007 and
we're at the point now when we HAVE to use the extended solver, not
just the one that comes with excel.

I went to the website and they require a class code and a book code to
download the latest educational version that works with excel 2007. I
don't know what the book code is, all I see behind my book is the isbn
and the bar code. I emailed them but it's saturday and I kind of need
it for monday. Is there any way I can make my current CD install
properly and work with excel 2007?

I'm not knowledgable about compatibility issues between Excel 2003 and 2007.
But in the interest of expediency, I suspect it will be useful to someone
who can help if you would explain what you mean by "it just won't work".

Does is fail to load an add-in? Does it load okay, but you get some kind of
error when you run it? If the latter, specifically what error?

Or is the premium solver in the form of a macro in an Excel 2003 file?

In a nutshell, the more details you can provide, the sooner you will get a
better answer.

However, one thought: can you find a computer that has Excel 2003 and that
permits you to use your CD?

It might a friend's a co-student's computer. It might be a computer in the
public library or a place like (FedEx) Kinko's. (Although I would be
surprised if public computers permit you to use your CD.)

Sorry that I cannot be more helpful. I know first-hand how frustrating
these situations can be in crunch time. Good luck!

If you go to Solver.com's website you will see that you can obtain a 15 day
trial version simply by registering, which in theory would get you past the
weekend till you can sort out your course code etc:

Straight from the site
If you register on Solver.com (it's free), you can:

a.. Download a free 15-day Trial Version of any of our Excel Solver
products
b.. Download our Solver User Guides -- learn more about our Excel
products, and how to build better optimization models
c.. Access "protected" Tech Support pages and downloadable example models

Sorry for not providing more details the first time. This is what
happens, the .exe is in the cd, but after installation all it rally
does is mess up my solver from excel. The way it should work is to
install it and then, in a new ribbon that says add-ins you have the
premium solver, which looks very much like the solver you have in
excel, except it has more options and different solving methods. I can
intall the one I have, but like I said, all it does it get me an error
message every time I open excel about the .xla file missing or not
running properly.

I'll try the 15 days trial, I just didn't want to download something
that I will uninstall afterwards.
