solution for missing desktop icons and taskbar

I tried everything else in this newsgroup to fix my missing icons and taskbar
after doing a disk cleanup, disk defrag and deletion of temp files (all in
one sitting, of course!!) in XP SP2. After rebooting, I had no icons or
taskbar. After a few hours of searching for solutions, I finally figured out
how to do a system restore since I didn't have a Start button to begin this
process!

For those of us new to finding files using the task manager:

from the windows task manager: go to File, Run
enter this... c:\documents and settings\all users.windows\start
menu\programs\accessories\system restore

Restore to a point earlier than the problem occurred.

It worked like a charm!!!!! I'm glad this worked before I did a reinstall!!!

I did try that utility (Red Cross Icon!!) but it didn't seem like the
program actually perfomred any action, other than something with my Shell.
The program wouldn't go any farther than that!

Definitely worth a try, though! File is small

Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!

Anyway glad to know that you have fixed the problem.
