Software(s) Won't Recognize Internet Connection

I have an active DSL connection through a wireless router.

I'm running XP on an HP Pavilion. It's new.

Even though I have an active connection, IE is the only software that
recognizes it.

Not Outlook, not Yahoo Messenger, not MSN Messenger, not my antivirus
updater... nothing.

HP/Windows won't help. Neither will my ISP or router.

Is there something in Network Connections I can clear and start over
from scratch?

HELP!!!!!

You may want to check your firewall settings to make sure that (a) on the
General tab, the "Don't allow exceptions" box is not checked and that (b) on
the Exceptions tab, the programs that you want to be able to access the
internet are listed and checked.
