software firewall necessary?

I have a D-Link wired router in my home network. Do I still need something
like ZoneAlarm firewall running? My ZoneAlarm Pro does not allow my network
to be recognized until I disable it(ZA). I've gone to www.donhoover.net and
configured ZA as per instructions to no avail. Do I really need it? Thanks
for any info, Steve T.

Hi
Yes I would recommend adding software Firewall and AntiSpy protection
programs to the mix.
Internet -Basic protection: http://www.ezlan.net/firewall.html
Internet Infestation: http://www.ezlan.net/infestation.html
Basic Steps in cleaning Internet "Junk" - http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html
There are elements of personal preferences in choosing Firewall (I stay away
from ZA; some versions of ZA are major trouble to LAN).
My favorite of the freebees is the Old version of Kerio.

For AntiSpy try the Excellent release of Microsoft

Depends who you ask. Some people are more paranoid than others. Your router
is a firewall, and negates the necessity for any other firewall. Some people
like to know what is being sent OUT from their PCs, and Zone Alarm is good
for that. Of course, if you're not a technical person then you may not
understand how to answer the questions ZoneAlarm asks and end up, like many
others, locking yourself out of your own PC.

I accidentally found ZA on the Host PC was set on Firewall>Zone>Internet
while the Client PC was set on Firewall>Zone>Trusted. I set both on Trusted
and now the network is visible from both PC's. I don't know if this correct
or if it they should both be set to Internet. Thanks for the input Carey. I
was about to remove ZA and start from scratch as per your tutorial. Steve T
