Sockets And The Future??

Hi Guys,

I was thinking of starting a prject but I find that there is now an
omnifarious choice of sockets, now available since my last home build
(socket A).

On the socket A I was able to upgrade the processor over the years
which managed to keep me, if not current, then, not far behind.

So anyone like to hazard a guess at what current socket would offer
the best bangs per buck while still providing a reasonable future.
Some sockets have a habit of hanging around for ages - othes not.

I was thinking 939 but that is just a guess.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If you go AMD the Socket AM2 is the way to go.AMD's entire desktop
line is on the AM2 (Unlike in the past when the budget CPUs on the 754
and the mid & high-end on the 939).The Sempron 64,Athlon 64 ,Athlon 64
X2 & even an Athlon 64 FX are all on the AM2.
Plenty of options now and I would imagine well into the future...or
at least the near future.

Also important is selection/variety/availability of components.

If you're going to end up upgrading the CPU anyway, considering the
fact the mainboard is an inexpensive component in a system, you
don't really have much to worry about as far as upgrade path goes.
One thing for sure, they're always providing upgrade paths for us.

:blush:/

I'm talking about someone who takes components with them from the
old system to a new mainboard.

Good luck and have fun.

No.
If you are sticking with AMD then the AM2 socket is the one to go for now.
It has been current for a while now and AMD are intending it to be used for
some time to come.
Socket A did indeed hang around for a long time and hopefully AM2 will too.
Cheers!
