So irritated Right Now

I am so fed up with microsoft right now, it is all I can do to keep from
taking it out on my poor innocent computer which is caught in the middle.
With every update I get for I.E.7 my computer runs worst. First, I don't see
any advantage to I.E. 7's tabbed browsing because whever I try to open a
second tab, the browser crashes...even without opening a second tab, I get
that infuriating message "microsoft has encountered an error and must shut
down" way too much. It doesn't matter what I am doing either...the message
shows up so randomly, I can't find a reason behind it. Microsoft encounters
errors from everything from logging in to an account, typing an e-mail, while
scrolling through a page, it will even encounter an error if I copy a word to
paste somewhere else. I have to take a Xanax before I even think about
ebaying because I can be as sure that I will get Microsoft encountered an
error and shuts me down when I am in engaged in a battle of the bids. By the
time I went through the BS of microsoft asking me to send them a report and
get back to where I was, I lost the auction. My biggest pet peeve with this
encounter an error shut down crap happens when I am in my drawing
program...which is not connected to the web and my work freezes so I can't
save it, then the microsoft has encountered an error and must shut down.
What kind of error could microsoft possibly have when I working with programs
that don't have a thing to do with microsoft? It is so depressing to have
spent four hours on a picture only to have microsoft shut the program down
when I hit the save button...without saving. What would happen if I turned
the automatic update manager off and refused to accept more updates from
microsoft? Everytime I get an update, my computer loses a function and or
runs worst than it did before the update. When I got the second to last
update from microsoft, my computer had problems with stand-by and hibernate.
I could go into stand-by or hibernate, but when I turned the computer back on
Norton would quit working and I lost windows, so I'd have to do a hard reboot
to get everything working right. The last update I recieved from microsoft
makes the page I am trying to close unresponsive....everytime. I have to do
control atl delete a couple of times to get the page to shut down. I must
have been very niave when I had the idea that updates were to be an
improvement. I'm half suspicious that microsoft creates these problems to
make us send them "error reports" They get 50-100 error reports from my
computer daily and I have yet to see any changes made.

there''s no law against whacking them around a bit.

Sure, Murphy's Law always lurks around the corner. But why abet it?
Was there really a good, valid reason for updating to IE 7, other than
for the fact that it was there for the uploading and installing? Was
adequate research done before doing the upload? And if it was uploaded
and installed via automatic updates, you really want Microsoft taking
control of your life?

I sympathize, but the problems you are having aren't the result of IE7 or
any other well running program. You have file corruption and that's what's
going on.
BTW, you can uninstall IE7 from Add/Remove and it'll put you back at IE6
but whether it will still work or not is questionable considering all the
other problems you mention.

There are some good ways to clean up your system and get it runing better
again. Some of the posters here have excellent boilerplate to help you to
that end and you can always ask for it if no one pipes in.
It is probably now VERY important to back up ALL of your data, including
email, address book, favorites; everything in the My Documents and Settings
folder if you've used it properly.

But, here's how I used to look at things like that. If I think it'll take
me more than a couple hours of work to get everything working right, I make
sure my backups are up to date, and then I would just re install XP from the
git-go and reinstall all the apps and then restore from backup any data I
might have lost.

Here's how I do it NOW though: If I think it'll take me much more than 15
minutes or so, I update the incremental data backups and then restore the
whole drive from a drive image from before the problem showed up. There are
other good programs, but I use Ghost 10 for mine. The OS and all my data
come back and all I've lost is whatever I've done/created since the date I
restored from. And that all exists in my data backups should I lost
anything. I keep the OS and data separate on different drives so backups
are easier. I can restore just the OS or just the data or both.
I keep a month's backups on an external drive so as long as I notice a
big problem soon enough I always have an image I can go back to where the
problem didn't exist. It's save my bacon a couple of times the last couple
of years.

Hi karebu,

Have you tried Firefox (but it uses tabs also)? I've had a lot of
clients that installed IE7 and their workstations had various ills until
it was removed.
