for some reason, the volume icon has disappeared, serach the microsoft.com
and realised the SndVol32.exe has either damaged or not found. I dont have
the XP cd to reinstall as it came preloaded with the VAIO. Can anyone help me
out here ? perhaps direct me to a copy of SndVol32.exe. ( hope this is not
against the rules, I do have a genuine copy of XP)

Look for the following on your harddrive:
C:\Windows\System32\i386\sndvol32.ex_
Or
C:\Windows\i386\sndvol32.ex_
The extension of .ex_means the file is compressed.

:
expand compressed file

The simplest way to expand it is to:
Start>Run>type MSCONFIG and press OK
Bottom righthand corner, click Expand file
Now fill in the blocks to complete it.
File to restore: sndvol32.exe
Restore from: C:\Windows\i386\sndvol32.ex_
Save file in: C:\Windows\System32
When blocks are filled in, click Expand.
