SMTP replication

I am studying for an exam and am confused by below statement. If i had one
domain with a separate site with a unreliable link and had to use smtp to
replicate surely i do not have to create a child or new domain for smtp
use?.

STATEMENT:
Whether link is SMTP-only. If a location is connected by SMTP-only links, it
must have its own domain. Mail-based replication can occur only between
domains; it cannot be used between domain controllers in the same domain.

Any help on this one much appreciated.

Yes it can only occur between domain controllers in different domains.

Yes. (you do have to have separate domains)

And therefore it only replicates objects of use to the
entire forest. Things like the GC (global catalogue),
Configuration (think Sites and Services), and the Schema.

And so it is almost never used in real life.

The normal "reasons" for being forced to use
SMTP are (absolute) firewall protocol restrictions,
or WAN lines of such poor quality or such latency
that RPC/IP is unusable.

Even slow (but reliable, low latency) lines can support
RPCs.

Also, note that certificates are required for SMTP replication
(There has to be a way to sign and secure the data) so many
people have had trouble setting this up even if they intended to
try or use it.

(The certificate trust lists have to also be on each side of the
relationship.)

To further elaborate on what others wrote. The reason why SMTP can not be
used for replication within domain is, that FRS (fire replication service)
can not be used for replicating file share SYSVOL which is needed for
GPO's...
