"SMTP" is not the correct server name.
You need to get the correct name from your email provider.

D

Dave

You have a different problem.
You are trying to send email thru a ntlworld server, while your IP address
indicates that you are connected to BTbroadband.
Is this correct?

Many ISP's are now blocking port 25 to prevent this.
You need to see if NTL has an alternate port to use.

Who is your ISP or mail provider? You will have to get the correct
mail server names from them.

Simon Am

Yes Dave is this correct, the reason i am using ntlserver is i use my ntl
e-mail as my main e-mail. So how would i sent this up under ntl, or would i
have to set it up under my bt server for example pop3.bt.com

Does NTL let you use a different port for outgoing mail? If so, connections
using other ports are unlikely to be affected.

http://help2.virginmedia.com/help/getContent.jspx?page=help_internet_vista

You could use the outgoing server portions of the BT instructions, but keep
the same incoming server and the same return address:

http://www.btopenworld.com/faqs/manual_email_setup

The instructions are for Outlook Express, but should also work under
Windows Mail if they don't call for the HTTP protocol.

To see the ports you're using, click on Tools, then Servers, then your
email account, then Properties, then Advanced. There are about 65,000
ports available to use, but some of them are dedicated to specific
purposes such as reaching an email server. If you change the port
number, click on Apply. Click on OK, then Close.

Those look like the correct server names.

Port 25 is the one that's seldom able to cross from one internet provider's
equipment to another's, so it's the one you need to change if you don't
change the outgoing email server. If you change the outgoing email
server so the outgoing connection doesn't make such a crossover, you
can usually keep using port 25, but check if the new server needs
something else instead.

Those look like reasonable server names for such a server change.

However, do not change the port number unless you know for sure
that your mail server supports that alternate port.

Yes, you're on the right track. There is no requirement that the
incoming and outgoing mail servers be a matched pair. However,
if your outgoing mail server requires authentication, there is an extra
step you must take. Go to Tools, Accounts, select the account,
Properties, Servers, and after checking the box for "My server
requires authentication", click on the adjacent 'Settings' button,
then "Log on using" and enter your credentials for btinternet.com.
By default it uses the credentials for the POP server, which is not
appropriate here.

You have to set up the sending server to the one for the network you are
connected to, *or*, bypass the problem by using a 3rd party SMPT server, for
example from google mail. These 3rd party servers won't be using the ports
that your ISP blocks, so the problem just doesn't exist.

Have someone send you an invitation to gmail, then set up the account,
then read their explicit help files on how to set up with Outook and Outlook
Express - it's virtually identical to Windows Mail.

Also, just be aware of the "change reply-to address" settings.

Once this is done you can reliably send mail from anywhere in the world,
regardless of the ISP.

Generally, the short answer is no. Do this only on advice from the mail
provider.

You should only change this if the *mail server* actually uses another port.

If you change the setting to a port they aren't using, the mail will fail.

And how would i sent out the pop and smtp? Would i do it as follows
pop3.ntlworld.com and for smtp.btinternet.com for my ntl e-mail to work?

Basically, yes. You also need to change the reply-to address, otherwise
when people get your mail, they will reply to <yourname>@btinternet.com.

If you travel, or if this system is a laptop that you use in different
locations, get a 3rd party mail account, like gmail, and use its smtp
server. this is easy and cheap and allows you to change the setting just
once.

Pam

I also am having this very same problem. I've tried to read through the
chain of postings to see the resolution but do not see anything. I can't
send any emails without getting this error. I don't know what I'm supposed
to do. Do I change my out mail server from smtp to something else, if so,
what? I'm totally lost.
