Smart Scan possible with AVG?

When I was using Norton AV it was possible to scan by a collection of
file types considered vulnerable to viruses. With AVG, I can only find
ways to scan files, folders, or drives. A full driveC scan takes
approx. 45 minutes, and doesn't seem necessary. Am I missing
something?

Try, from Test Center window, Tests -> Complete Test Settings, under
"File Extensions" tick "Scan all infectable files", instead of "Scan
all files". Also, un-ticking "Scan inside archives" should speed
things up. Un-ticking "Use Heuristic Analysis" may also speed the
scan, but may not be advisable.

Thanks so much. To my surprise, AVG was already set to scan all
infectables instead of all files. I've unticked "inside archives" as
you suggested but will leave heuristic as is for now. I guess that I
also had a smaller hard drive when I was using Norton AV.

You're welcome. A bigger HD, and mostly more files, will make for a
longer scan :). Other means of shortening scans are to first stop all
unneeded processes with task manager, or do a selective boot with
msconfig, and/or scan from safe mode.
