Slow XP Login on Domain except via VPN

I have read all of the threads, articles, etc. regarding slow login
times for XP clients and most of it makes some sense to me.

I am attempting to replace half of the current computers with XP Pro SP2b
computers and upgrade the rest to XP Pro SP2b (clean install). This is where
I discovered my problems with the XP slow login issue.

As a side issue, I have a W2K server with AD and a single-label domain name
(I now know that this is a problem and it will be addressed, but this isn't
the question I'm trying to get answered here.)

I have four locations connected via D-Link DI-804HV VPN routers with
dedicated tunnels from the three remote locations to one central location.

Currently, all computers are Windows 98SE, with the exception of one Windows
XP SP2 computer. The XP computer is at a remote location and logs into the
domain over the VPN "without any slow login issues". The remote XP computer
has no problem accessing network resources at the central location.

When I attempt to attach a new XP computer to the network at the central
location, I get the slow login issue.

Now to my question.

Why does my one remote XP Pro computer connecting to the domain via the VPN
connection NOT have the single-label domain issue or the slow XP login issue?
(I'm seriously concidering building a VPN tunnel at the main location, just
as a workaround.)

Slow logins are often the result of DNS issues, check the DNS settings. Are
you using DHCP or fixed IP, if DHCP check the DNS settings on the DHCP
server.

If using DHCP try, to test, using fixed IP to see if the problem is DHCP
related?

Hi Steve, at the central location I am pointing my test XP computer directly
to the DNS server (which is also my AD and DC). I'm working on resolving my
issues there the hard way. My question is why does my VPN connected XP
computer NOT have the same issue?
