Slow word works and other office applications?

I have a Compaq running XP with a 2ghz athlon and 384 mb
ram (128 + 256) and 128mb video card.

My word processing programs open extremely slow, while my
cpu usage never spikes over 3% while loading. Trying to
adjust page setup or printer settings along with any other
menu is a nightmare.

I put one of the same programs on a win98 w/ a 500mhz
celeron and it loads in about 3 seconds.

Can anyone tell me why and possibly how to fix it?

You certainly shouldn't be slow with that hardware. Is
everything slow or just the word processor? Try

Just about everything else runs extremely fast. Games
I can run at max resolution with best graphics and never
experience any problems. I only have problems with word
and works, and maybe a few other office products.
