Slow wireless connection on Desktop with Vista Home Premium

I got a brand new Dell Insprion 530 desktop (Intel Dual core processor, 2GB
memory). Internet connection using its pre-intalled wireless card is
extremely slow, while my laptop (also a Dell) run on XP works just fine from
the same location at home. Signal strength is excellent. I have cable modem.
I have disenabled startup programs and am not using any screensaver even.
Connection speed improves, but it is still noticeably slower. I do not like
these solutions anyway.

Any suggestions regarding cuases of the problem and/or different
performances? Shall I just forget about Vista and go back to XP? Thanks in
advance.

Are the wireless cards the same make? Some cards work better with their own
kind, others refuse to work and others work but at a reduced speed. You could
try to see if there are any newer drivers from the manufacturer and see
whether that fixes your problem - don't forget to set a system restore point
before trying. Try changing the cards over - only possible if the wireless
card is fitted in an adapter on your desktop pc.

I have a similar problem with a Compaq C571NR laptop, brand new. I have a
Belkin Wireless G router. When I first connect to the router in Vista I
connect at a speed of 1400k, full T-1 speed. For 10 minutes or so the world
is wonderful. Then after my computer runs for awhile, it drops to 40k!!!!,
yes that's 40 k. I have updated the driver for the wireless card in Vista.
I have updated the firmware for the Belkin router to the latest version. I
have researched every properties setting I can find and nothing seems to
help. I have a wired PC (running XP Pro) sitting right beside this laptop
going into the same router and its speed remains solid at 1400k. The
distance between the router and the laptop?.... three feet, ok... five feet.
I am sure it is some type of setting, but what is the problem?
