Slow Win2k Network

M

Marty

Hi All,
Having trouble with very slow network connections on
Domain. The server is running Win2k Server SP4 and all but
one of the clients are running Windows XP Pro. The
symptoms are as follows:

-2-14 mins to logon to domain.
-excessively long time to copy network files.
-opening of networked files in office causes office and
system to hang/lockup for up to 3 mins.

The server has a gigabit network card going into a Gigabit
Switch which is then uplinked to a 10/100 switch. Two of
the XP clients are also on Gigabit the other 12 are using
10/100. I have tested the networking gear individually and
it appears to be functioning correctly. Which leads me to
think it is a client / server config problem.

Any help would be apreciated on this.
Cheers
Marty

The first place to start is to make sure the XP clients are using the DNS
server that contains the AD domain records and NOT an ISP DNS server.

If you haven't already Try forcing Cards and switches to
desired rate/duplex. my experience is Auto detect does not
work well even if it test ok especially in a mixed rate
network.

Do you have any Group Policies defined? If so, large GPOs can take a significant time to process.

Thanks All,
The DNS appears to have been the problem but I have also
looked at the other sugestions and will see if I cannot
tweek it a little further.
