Slow to open files

PRESENT321

I've got a real puzzler.
XP Professional on a domain; all the patches are up to date.
If I try to open any text file, word document, or pdf from Windows
Explorer or my desktop, I have to wait at least 45 seconds for it to
open.
However, if I disable my LAN connection by opening up 'Network
Connections' in Control Panel and right-clicking on 'Local Area
Connections' and choosing 'Disable', the file opens immediately as it
should.
If I enable the LAN connection, the problem returns.

An added piece to the puzzle; the context menu takes a long time to
come up when right clicking on these files.

Norton Antivirus and Lavasoft AdAware scans come up empty.

Any ideas?

There was a recent update that produced this behaviour, -sorry don't
have the number here, but google the archives from this NG and you
will see plenty of references.

Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled -

Manage the context-menu entries for folders, drives and Namespace
objects - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/context_folders.htm

And of course, make sure your DNS settings are correct. The server
should look to itself and the workstations should look to the server.

I looked and couldn't the references to the update. I may be as blind
as a bat. Can you help me find it?

Thanks,

Thanks for the tip! It turns out that deleting this key solves the
problem:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Open With

However, now when I right click I do not have the option to "open
with" another program.
Any ideas?

Matthew

I'm sure you were smart enough to export the key before you deleted it.
Import it back. Then use the free ShellExView program as described at
the link above to systematically disable third-party context menu items
until you find the one that is causing all the trouble.

Yes, I did export the key :)
I used ShellExView to disable all third party items, rebooted, but
still no go.

Check out a recent update KB 908531. I had a similar problem and
research showed me that this update has caused MANY different problems.
I uninstalled it and everything is normal ...again.

I looked in add/remove programs with "show updates" checked, but didn't
see that update.
Any ideas?
