Slow startup

All right, after reading the other posts concerning this
problem, I still can't find the problem. It seems I am
not too good with computers so please help me (and
explain as clearly as possible...)

Windows XP Home takes over 4 minutes to start, I have
pentium 4 at 2.6 gHz with 512 megs of Ram (so hardware
should be fine). I had this problem as it took Xp close
to 2 minutes to startup but when I installed Norton
internet security 2004 2 days ago, the speed got horribly
slow.

Before installing NIS, I tried re-installing Windows XP
without deleting my C drive (as I don't know how to and
don't want to delete the D partition containing valuable
infos in the process) and the situation improved only by
some 10 seconds.

After NIS installation: all other processes seem slower
as well...

I tried to check the event log but nothing seems to be
related to my startup problems...

Any suggestion before I buy a mac?

Don't waste your money on that MAC yet! First, remove everything from this
folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Next open registry editor

Start--> Run --> regedit

Navigate to the following keys:

HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

Delete everything from both locations except anything that points to Norton!
Let us know how much faster this makes your startups...

Good Luck!

Not that much incapacitated...

However: I get to the wallpaper screen faster but it
still takes 3-4 minutes before any application can open
(eg: my internet connection). I have to wait some 1 min
40s (timer in hand...) to hear Windows annoy me with the
startup jingle...

Suggestions?

Have you tried run type in msconfig,ok,startup
tab,disable everything,apply ,ok,restart,check box for
don't show this again,if it starts faster post back and
i'll post to you what you'll need to turn back
on,ie:antivirus,firewall....,if it don't start faster,go
back and enable everything back, and restart.

A thought to try(don't know if you did or not but I had
the same problem with nortons and this solved my problems).
Disconnect from the net, uninstall nortons completely!,
reboot, reinstall, reboot.
Reconnect and get updates for nortons.
Just a thought.

nope: nothing faster...

Guess I'll have to re-install XP cause I've been playing
a lot with its settings recently...

Now we know that this isn't a windows problem, if you followed my previous
suggestions!
Now if you lose the Norton crapware then things should be back to normal.
For antivirus you can download AVG free edition which works better than NAV.

Good Luck!

Rocky-

Too bad rock for you, but my suggestions didn't cause any problems (as
usual).

Now go back to hiding under your rock while I continue to attempt to help
people here, with legit suggestions.

I would think twice before re-installing XP over the old version. I am having the same problem you are and after trying everything mentioned in these newsgroups and not solving the slow startup, went ahead and re-installed XP. I had numerous problems after that including not being able to log on to the internet (USB drivers had to be re-installed). Took days to get back to "normal"

I keep hoping a Microsoft MVP comes up with a solution but I am about to give up hope.
