Slow start up?

G

Guest

My pc's been having slow start up's for awhile and I really havn't bothered
trying to fix it until now. Basically when I turn it on or restart it and log
on it takes a solid 5 minutes until I can click anything. Even after the 5
minutes the programs take awhile to actually regiester that I clicked them.
After about 30 minutes on the computer it goes back to normal and its fast
agian.

Also it seems to be one program that takes forever to load once I log in,
that program is Norton... hopefully someone can help me, if not thx anyways
guys!

Uninstall Norton (everything), go to Symantec and get their Uninstall
Utility (to clean up what the standard uninstall does not), then get Avast
or AVG or Kaspersky (or a few others) to protect you.

Symantec/Norton security products are garbage.

Norton used to be a great program, but no longer. They've recently made
changes to improve its impact on a system, but I think they're too late.
I would uninstall it, go to the Symantec site and download the removal
registry tool for leftover junk, and install a free AV program, like:
AVG (free.grisoft.com)
Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html)
Antivir (www.free-av.com)

Also check to see if you have any mapped drives to a network and
disconnect them. This can cause quite a slow down on login if the
network is not available.

Over in the W98 newsgroups, we throw stones at NAV simply because it is so
intrusive and a memory hog. Now that that's out of the way <G>, how often
do you run scans for spyware and virus/trojans with up to date programs such
as AdAware and your NAV? Personally, I'd dump NAV and use one of the free
AV programs such as AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Do you defrag your drive?

Run msconfig.exe and take a look on the startup tab at the programs starting
at boot. My personal rule is a program should only start if it is essential
or if I use the program every time I boot the PC. You are probably going to
find that there is all kinds of stuff loading at boot. You will probably
have to use Google.com to determine what some of the programs/files are. If
you get rid of what doesn't need to start at boot, you should find a much
faster boot process. This article tells you about the registry run keys:

Disable Norton and see if your problem goes away.

Hi Obey,

Perhaps looking at another AV product is in order for you. I won't use
Norton products on a PC I own - its just my personal choice. The chief
problem I've found with it - is that its a system resource hog.

However, I'd perform some checks for malware, using a combo of Adaware SE
and Spybot Search and Destroy - with updated definitions - in safe mode.
But first plan to do some preliminary clean up of your system before you
scan. (Less crap for Adaware and Spybot S&D to sift through)

Use the "Internet Options " applet in the control panel to delete "temporary
Internet files". I run delete temp files 2 times to be sure I got
everything - especially the offline content stuff. Delete your Cookies, and
also empty your history.

Next - click on start, run and type %temp% click on run.
If there is anything in the folder, Empty it out. You can't erase index.dat
or other files that are in use by Windows in normal mode.
..
Next Click on the up Arrow in Windows Explorer. Click on Temporary internet
files. In the Address bar you'll want to add "Content.IE5" after
\Temporary Internet files\ Delete everything in both of those
directories - if there is any contents listed - but don't delete the folders
themselves.

Open the Disk Cleanup Utility in System tools, and click ok on the cleaner
to inspect Drive C: Click on more options tab, click on [Clean up] in the
System Restore area. This will remove all but the most recent restore
point.

Reboot your PC into "Safe mode" (pressing on F8 key)

Do your scans for spyware using Both AdawareSE, and Spybot search and
destroy, quarantine anything either program finds.

Reboot back into normal mode. See if this improves your PC's performance at
startup to any degree.

As for AV protection - Nod32 is a good anti-virus, so is Kaspersky
Anti-virus, also Avast! and Antivir are supposed to be pretty good.

Good luck, let us know how trying this works out for you.

Is it (Norton) doing a scan of all the files on your pc each time you start
up? That might explain why it takes a long time to start and is general slow
until your 30minutes mark (assuming it takes 30 minutes to complete it
scan).

Many Norton Home products are a convoluted mess of services and
sub-components. Usually, the ccApp ( Common Client App ) is the
ring leader and can experience all kinds of issues with starting at boot.
There are two approaches to fix it - Uninstall Norton or just live with
the lousy performance it inflicts on the PC. It just isn't worth the time
and effort to track down Event Log errors, get updates, turn off the
extensive logging that NIS suites regularly perform/track.
The "Average" boot cycle time for XP is around 45-seconds. This is
with normal programs installed and "Startup & Watchdogs" trimmed
back to a minimal level.
The problem with Norton software is using it is slow/problematic and
getting rid of it (effectively) is a long, drawn-out process.
