Slow running, processor working 100% problem

Running Windows XP Home

I think I've seen references to this problem before as it
may be a virus I have obtained.
On starting my PC it runs very slow, checking the task
manager reveals the processor constantly running at 100%
instead of the more common 0-10%. In the processes is a
program using almost all the processor capacity, stopping
this process eliminates the problem.
Cannot find any reference to the starting of the rogue
program as every time it starts up it uses a different
name.
Can anybody advise on removal of this pest?
Thanks

Hi Tony,

And what does a full system scan with an updated AV program tell you?

On the processes tab of Task Manager, is there a task that, when killed,
comes right back? Perhaps with a different name? This is a "smart" virus,
and to remove it requires restarting in Safe mode, then deleting both the
infecting file(s) and the registry entries referring to them in the run
keys.
