slow pptx in Office 2003

We have Office 2003 with Compatibilty Pack installed.
No problem opening/saving docx, xlsx and pptx files. (the Office 2007
file formats)
However one user reports that pptx files are very slow. When switching
slides, he loses the menu bar for a few seconds. I asked about file
size, cpu and memory usage, but he won't tell me, he just wants a
solution.

Are there any known issues with pptx files in Powerpoint 2003?
My google-fu isn't strong enough to find any good clues.

Nothing specific that I'm aware of. It's only PPTX files?

I'd make sure the user has all Office service packs installed and all
Windows updates. Apparently the compatibility pack needs all Windows updates
to install and work properly. So it won't hurt to try.

Additionally, I'd have the user change hardware acceleration.

You might also try updating video drivers.

PPT 2007 files seem to have much more "stuff" in them -- transparencies,
shadows, gradients, etc. -- and I'd imagine those can be pretty hard on the
graphics drivers.

If none of those helps and the user can't be bothered to participate in
troubleshooting, then he's on his own. :)

I'm quite sure that it isn't an update problem. Patch management is
actually quite good over here.

It's a laptop, so graphics hardware might indeed be an issue.

I would think that this "stuff" is ignored in O2k3 after conversion,
but it remains in the file when you reopen it in O2k7, so yeah
perhaps. I'll tell him that. Se non è vero, è bene trovato, as the
Italians say. ;-)

Well, he's my boss, so... ;-)
